The Technical Laboratory Assistant, or TLA, will;
- processes specimens for testing,
- Uses the laboratory information system to register patients, enter orders for testing, determine medical necessity and look up results and direct reports to the appropriate entities,
- routes specimens for testing,
- answers phone calls,
- provide testing reports via information, fax or printed copy,
- stocks supplies on benches or from shipments,
- loads specimens into instruments for testing once trained and competency is signed as satisfactory,
- discards specimens when testing is complete or lifespan is reached,
- performs CLIA Waived specimen testing and reports results of testing once trained and competency is signed as satisfactory,
- contacts specimen collector for information, as needed and appropriate within HIPAA,
- empty trash and waste bins,
- maintain clean orderly work environment,
- handle and process specimens and paperwork as instructed in written instruction in conjunction with verbal instruction,
- packaging and shipping samples and supplies,
- duties and tasks defined by supervisor,
- and other duties as assigned.
The Technical Laboratory Assistant, or TLA, will not;
- use an alternate process for handling, process or testing specimens or paperwork other than that specified in written instruction,
- perform specimen testing in any category other than CLIA Waived,
- enter test results for testing they did not perform,
- order testing without clean and specific clinician order,
- and take or act upon a verbal order.
