Overview

Responsible for responding to requests by the nursing staff of physician staff to assist with ALS
interventions and to assist with emergency care within the emergency department according to
protocols and policies approved by the hospital and emergency department medical director, and
hospital policy.

Responsibilities

Responds to requests for paramedic level services from areas within the emergency department in a timely and safe manner.

Completes documentation and records according to department policy.

Documentation is complete, accurate and legible.

Ensures emergency equipment is ready for response at all times.

Knows location and proper use of equipment.

Restocks trauma cart and resuscitation equipment within the department daily.

Reports damaged, unsafe or malfunctioning equipment according to policy.

Assists with codes and critical care patients within the emergency department at the paramedic level, including interdepartmental transport and monitoring.

Is proficient in all related ALS skills.

Demonstrates a pleasant and professional manner with patients and coworkers.

Gives accurate, concise reports.

The paramedic performs assigned duties in the emergency department under the supervision of Nursing/Physician with documentation of proper training and skills evaluation.

Assists with 12 Lead EKGs, blood draws.

Initiates IV access and appropriate titration flow rate and documents same according to policy.

Administer medications as defined in scope of practice.

Performs Phlebotomy and lab specimen labeling according to policy.

Assists with patient care at RN request.

Performs duties as needed, including, but not limited to, eye irrigation, transport, visual acuity assessment, and crutch walking instruction.

The performance of CPR.

Point of care testing.

Cardiac monitoring and EKGs.

O2 Administration.

Splinting of non-fractures and wound cleaning.

The reassessment of patients, data collection, and medical record recording.

Spine immobilization.

Assists charge nurse and/or triage nurse in assessing, prioritizing, and maintaining patient flow and assists in waiting to be seen.

Under direction of RN/MD the Paramedic may:

Provide triage under the direction of RN/MD.

Order labs and x-rays according to protocols.

Immobilizes extremity, apply ice, elevation. Reassess extremity after interventions performed.

Documents interventions on triage record.

Order lab & x-rays according to protocols.

Pursues new levels in paramedicine technology and participates in activities which contribute to professional growth and development.

Maintains current certifications as required

Attends all required safety training programs and can describe role responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards

Operates assigned equipment in condition required by department standards.

Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.
Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

Demonstrates an understanding of established emergency, infection control, and/or universal precautions.

Demonstrates knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.

Assures a safe environment by instituting appropriate control measures.

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter-and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet it’s goals and

Qualifications

Minimum of two years’ full-time experience preferred as a provider of pre-hospital care in an
Emergency setting (paramedic level preferred).
Full-time experience must be within one year of date of application.
Current EMT-P registration in the state.
Current certification in CPR, American Heart Association Course C or American Red Cross CPR for
The Professional Rescuer.
Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, American Heart Association.
