The Surgical Technologist Extern is accountable for performing a variety of duties in the Operating Room and Central Sterile Supply to assist the surgical team, under the supervision, guidance, and direction of a certified surgical technologist, or central sterile supply technician.

Under the continuous direct on-site supervision of a Surgical Technologist or Central Sterile Supply Technician:

• Sets up tables, instruments, and supplies required for specific operation. Carries out surgical asepsis.
• Assists the surgical team during operative procedure.
• Assists in the preparation for surgical procedures.
• Assists in the preoperative preparation of patients.
• Assists with table equipment, positioning of patients, and application of dressings.
• Assists with preparing the operative specimen for delivery to laboratory for analysis.
• Assists in transporting patients to and from the Operating Room, Recovery Room, and patient care areas.
• Assists in cleaning the Operating Room, equipment, and instruments following surgery.
• Stocks supplies in work areas.
• Participates in daily and monthly departmental cleaning assignments.
• Prepares Operating Room for the next case or the next day.
• Maintains a safe environment for patient care.
• Assures quality production of CSS trays and packs to decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments.
• When assisting in CSS, assembles packs, trays, etc. according to established procedure.
• Transports sterile packs and trays to proper storage area.

                                Performs other duties as assigned.

Education
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Enrollment in accredited Surgical Technologist Program
• Current Transcripts and Copy of Skills Evaluation on basic procedures
• Recommendation Letter from 2 Instructors
• Basic Life Support Certification
