Overview

The Operating Room Coordinator is to ensure the prompt, safe, quality and effective care of surgical patients.  The Coordinator is integrally involved in ensuring that staff, patients, and equipment come together seamlessly to move patients through the surgical process.

Responsibilities

• The Operating Room Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day running of OR activities and interdepartmental communication with the Anesthesia Board Runner, Sterile Processing staff, pre-op and OR staff. Coordinates activities in conjunction with the Emergency Room, general hospital units, and the post anesthesia care unit and other ancillary departments of the hospital. Update the board throughout the day with any add-on or emergency case and notifies all necessary personnel/department involved.


• Coordinate patient flow from throughout the hospital into the operating room. This includes ensuring that the patient is ready for surgery, surgeon is available for procedure, and a competent operating room staff is assigned. Coordinate breaks and lunches for staff.


• They record information from each step of the process on a large display board. The board is a visual representation of patient, staff, and equipment movement throughout the operating room suites.
• They work with the OR Director to monitor staff call-ins, review caseloads to give second rooms when needed and determine staffing needs on a daily basis and throughout the work day. Ensures the cases are pulled and instruments are available.


• The Coordinator makes rounds through the OR multiple times during the day to ensure that the rooms are cleaned appropriately and turnover is efficient and timely. Anticipate any possible foreseen delay and notifies patient and family along with staff and anesthesia.


• Also assist in staff education, competency testing, scheduling and other administrative duties as directed by their supervisor. Assist with enforcing dress code to ensure that proper surgical attire and ID badges are worn.


• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  •  Experience working in the Operating Room at least two years

  • Graduated Surgical Tech Program-Preferred Certified.
  • Proficient knowledge of surgical procedures, necessary equipment, equipment sterilization process, sterile technique
  • Must be able to direct the workforce including physicians to provide quality, efficient care of our patients. 
  • Must be able to communicate well with a wide variety of contacts at all levels of the organization.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to protected health information and provider information
