This is a system level position that provides strategic leadership and oversight of all aspects of nursing student clinical placement and requirements and Nurse Extern Program Development/Oversight, in collaboration with the Director of the ARH Training Center, AVP of Nursing Education & Professional Practice, and facility Nursing Leadership.
The ARH Nursing Student & Extern Navigator has the overall responsibility for assuring the academic partners receive information relevant to nursing student clinical placements, such as orientation requirements, scope of practice, legal/ethical considerations, facility/unit requests, and all other ARH expectations. This includes orientation for academic clinical faculty. Additionally, the Navigator will oversee, guide, and support the ARH Nurse Extern program through coordinating with key stakeholders to ensure educational needs of both the extern and nursing department are maintained.
• Schedules/arranges nursing student clinical placements, in collaboration with unit Nursing Directors.
• Develops and enhances partnerships with academic organizations and workforce entities to positively impact workforce planning.
• Works in collaboration with others (e.g., Nursing, Talent Acquisition, Workforce Intelligence, Clinical Education Leaders, Senior leaders) to develop and implement strategies for sustainable workforce pipelines for key clinical positions through these partnerships.
• Develops and maintains orientation curriculum that is disseminated/delivered to academic partners.
• Oversees, maintains, and revises as necessary, curriculum and guidelines for the ARH Nurse Extern program.
• Evaluates effectiveness of all programs under the Nursing Student Navigator scope of responsibility.
Job Duties
• Nursing Student/Clinical Faculty Orientation and Student Placement Coordination
o Schedules/arranges nursing student clinical placements.
o Designs orientation curriculum/presentations meant for review with clinical faculty and nursing students.
o Utilizes collaboration skills to identify and manage student placement requests while monitoring timelines and resolving risks/barriers
o Efficiently and effectively allocates student requests, as appropriate, to support student placement and achieve strong relationships with local academic partners.
o Facilitates the planning and coordination of nursing student onboarding, placements, in clinical departments and evaluation of student experiences, implementing improvements, as needed, in collaboration with facility nursing leadership.
o Consults with ARH stakeholders to coordinate placement and address gaps.
• Oversee Nurse Extern Program and Support
o Provide support and guidance to all employed nurse externs.
o Work to create efficient systems and workflow for the extern’s program
o Coordinates clinical opportunities for nurse externs and monitors progression within the program levels
o Refines and maintains the extern program meets educational support needs of the nursing department staff.
o Coordinates with other stakeholders to ensure the entry of nurse externs leads to high clinical satisfaction to support transition to practice as a new graduate RN at ARH sills to identify problems and create solutions
Education:
• Associate’s degree in nursing (ADN or ASN) required.
• Bachelor’s degree (BSN) preferred.
• Simulation experience in the healthcare environment is desired.
Work Experience:
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in the healthcare and/or nursing education fields.
• Two (2) years’ experience in nursing leadership, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Current and valid license or compact license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Kentucky or WV
• Nursing Specialty Certification Required within two (2) years of hire
• Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation, and AVADE instructor status, or plan to obtain within 6 months
• Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
Licenses/Certifications
• Registered Nurse – Single State or Compact, Preferred
