The Director, Nursing Services is accountable for the overall administration of the department in order to meet the objectives of the hospital through planning, organizing, executing and evaluating the nursing care provided for patients in the hospital.

• Manage the department efficiently through the planning, organization, and control of all departmental activities.
• Formulate and implement departmental objectives in accordance with hospital goals.
• Develop, evaluate, implement, interpret, and maintain hospital plans, standards, and procedures for nursing practice in compliance with hospital policies, governmental regulations, and regulatory agency requirements. Serve as a role model by adhering to established policies and procedures.
• Supervise the implementation of total quality management concepts used to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care delivery systems throughout the hospital.
• Participate as a member of the hospital leadership team and contribute to strategic planning activities. Interpret and support the role of nursing within the hospital's strategic plans.
• Manage personnel functions, including interviewing, selecting, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating employees, or recommending such actions as necessary.
• Ensure employees receive orientation, required in-service education, maintain required licensure and certifications, and participate in programs that promote clinical competency and staff development.
• Determine staffing needs and patterns and recommend appropriate staffing levels and classifications consistent with approved staffing plans.
• Administer bargaining agreements at the local level for Nursing Services personnel.
• Coordinate the activities of nursing units and establish productive working relationships with the medical staff and support services.
• Maintain current knowledge of developments in nursing and healthcare and recommend new services, products, and equipment as appropriate. Participate in continuing education programs designed for nursing leaders.
• Provide direct patient care when advanced skills and judgment are required and demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care.
• Adhere to hospital infection prevention and control policies and procedures.
• Prepare departmental budgets, routine and special reports, and other required forms and documents.
• Take administrative call responsibilities when delegated by the Administrator.
• Serve on hospital committees and attend meetings as required.
• Work off-shifts, weekends, holidays, on-call assignments, and additional hours as necessary.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
